Hundreds of New Yorkers from refugee, immigrant, religious, and advocacy communities staged a march in observance of World Refugee Day. Marchers laid out 85 pairs of shoes representing 85,000 refugees not allowed into the U.S. in 2018; carried life-size orange rafts symbolizing refugee ocean crossings; and read the names of refugees who have died in transit.
Artists Gillie and Marc Schattner have created the world’s tallest bronze rhino sculpture as a means to inspire and mobilize people to affect real change against rhino horn sales. Their art calls for humans to work together to make sure that history won’t repeat itself. Their 17-foot tall sculpture will be used to raise critical awareness and the funds needed to protect northern white rhinos, as well as to educate people about the plight of the rhinos.

The poet Alexander Pope once wrote, “Hope springs eternal.” For Major League Baseball fans, that hope begins during spring training.
Spring training gives baseball fans the opportunity to see and meet their favorite major league players for autographs and selfies. During the regular season, many fans are disappointed when they are unable to get autographs or a photo taken with their favorite players, who are on a tight schedule in ballparks. (Players still find the time to sign a great deal of memorabilia.)
This action-packed event featured over 20 boxing matches, including NYPD Championship Fights, other Law Enforcement Championship Bouts, and a series of unique Grudge Matches for charity — at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden on March 15.
Top prospects and other big league hopefuls began workouts with their prospective teams on the east coast of Florida earlier this month. In a recent trip to Namibia, photographer Gordon Donovan visited Cape Cross in the Skeleton Coast, the home of the largest colonies of Cape fur seals in the world. It is nicknamed “the Smelliest Place on Earth.” After checking in with Namibian park officials and paying the minimum fee, he drove to the coastal headland.
A shuttered fertilizer plant in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx served as the latest venue for an NYPD boxing event, which this time around was called the Bronx Tough Turkey Tussle.
Approximately 5,000 people — most of them off-duty cops, their families and friends — watched and cheered as officers with the NYPD settled disputes in the boxing ring at the New York Expo Center.
New York City hosted its 98th annual Veterans Day Parade, the largest celebration of service in the nation, on Nov. 11. “America’s Parade” featured more than 20,000 participants, with marching bands, people on floats, veterans’ groups and military units.
At 11 a.m. — the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month — a solemn hush fell over Manhattan’s Madison Square Park as veterans laid wreaths under the Eternal Light Flagstaff to honor the fallen.
This year’s parade marks the centennial of the United States’ entry into World War I (1917-2017). The U.S. Air Force is this year’s featured service. The parade is also a key part of Veterans Day USA, a national network of events working toward the 100th anniversary of Veterans Day in 2019. (Yahoo News)
