Front Page Images Over the Years
Front page images from ABCNews.com between 1997-2001
ABC News required a FP image at 200 by 150 pixels with a short blurb on the GIF or PNG. This was the day of the dial up modem. A second FP 170 × 125 image was also needed. Two designer were on top of these all day long. Very time consuming of resources that could be gone elsewhere. A decent photo could have done the trick. These were challenging and sometimes fun to do.

In twelve years at CBS News, I witnessed significant changes in the treatment of FP images. The rule of thumb became to use photos unless no alternative was available. At times, the editor-in-chief requested high-quality photo illustrations. With each redesign, the sizes varied as the FP images, known as BAI's, were phased out. A FP image and a story image with four different sizes were created. Unfortunately, many older images, including those from 9/11, have vanished from my storage across CDs, DVDs, and hard drives. I am actively searching for these and other missing designs.

Like many websites, Yahoo's unique approach to using photo illustrations for original content made it stand out. While creating a dozen of these daily, the simple photo illustrations I made in the first four years at Yahoo were unfortunately lost in a flood incident. This experience underscores the importance of data backup and disaster recovery strategies for digital content creators.
